from hooray! to huh?

back in february i did a post about my new friend holga

oh, all the lovely times to be had

throughout these months i have snippety snapped away, and each time a small smile would fall upon my face, just at the idea of how the photo i just took would actually turn out.

you see, i was very optimistic.

so much so, that i planned on placing all my first Holga shots in their very own book.

well, on wednesday i strolled merrily into my local Walgreens and handed over my little roll of wonder.

they’d be developed in about an hour.

i walked out of there with nugget and a tiny new star in my right eye, a star of anticipation & quite seriously… glee! and no, i’m not exaggerating, i am easily glee-ified.

not one minute after i got into my kitchen and set down my bags, did my phone ring. man am i popular i thought, followed by, is this person spying on me?

well, turns out i’m not that popular and no one is spying on me. it was just the nice girl from Walgreens.

what could it be?

insert sound of a loud pop followed by an extremely lengthy fizzle

her: Hi Amy, the roll of film you just dropped off is black

me: uh-huh, and does this mean there’s nothing you can do for it?

i literally said that! as though they could revive my black roll of film with bitty hospital like contraptions made especially for these unfortunate cases.

i am still not sure what went wrong. although i have an idea that i don’t want to be true which is, i think i might have gotten a fake Holga!

i just checked the guy on ebay and under my investigation there are definitely some signs that indeed, my Holga might not ever take pictures.

i know i should’ve been more thorough before i purchased her. but you know me, buy now, cry like a big loser later.

well. i hope i’m wrong. but truly, she’s got one more chance and then she’ll just be added to my non-working camera collection. which is really sad.

oh well. live and learn yes?

i’m thinking about all the loveliness headed my way this spring

the books i would like to finish under the sun. although i truly find it hard to read in the sun, the movies make it look so easy.

and flowers. lots and lots of flowers. even at some traffic lights, i can look out my window and see pretty little flowers on the side of the road.

i love that.

but the thing i am excited for the most is the photographs i want to take. i am just bursting with ideas that have been jotted down in my notebook, waiting patiently for the nicer weather. this is the first spring i will be taking holga pictures too. so that is exciting in itself. i have been inspired by so many images over the winter, i just can’t wait to shutter bug away.

she arrived a few weeks ago and i wasn’t the greatest at welcoming her.

completely paralyzed by the how to of using her, i set her on my bookshelf and just picked her up every now and then to stare at her like a little kid stares at, well, everything unfamiliar.

then, on sunday, i decided it was time to really get to know her.

turns out, holga is not as confusing as i thought, she came with a manual that actually makes sense.

yes, it was strange loading the 35mm film (even though that’s all i used when i was a teenager!) yes, it was dumb of me to get upset when the flash didn’t work as i annoyingly thought – well-p, there’s that! and then later saw that you have to install batteries.

how in the world did i think something like a flash could work with no batteries? i mean really, sometimes i am super dumb.

so, i’ve snapped about 8 pictures with her and she is awesome. course, i hear that beginners usually develop their first role to discover black shots and that it’s trial and error until you hone your skill of these little whimsy cameras. and hone i will.

i absolutely adore the sound of the flash, really! it’s so something.

i know i am wishful thinking but i think my pics might turn out good, even this first time around.

just the ones that i actually remembered to take the lens cap off for.

so, sorry holga, for abandoning you out of fear. you are now officially a part of my life and this post is my cheers to you and i and all the wonderful moments we are going to share.

yay us.
